Tide clocks are designed to keep the average rate between high and lunar tides. By reading the clock face, the clock hand will show the number of hours from high or low tide. While navigators often use tide tables via a booklet or computer, tide clocks are a simple, beautiful, and classic way to track the tides.

McBride offers these instructions on setting the tide clock for the first time: "Set your clock on the day of the full moon at the time of the high tide according to local tide tables. If the Tide Clock is set correctly on the day of the full moon it will display the minimum "error" throughout the entire month. Once set just enjoy it, it should not be adjusted. Change the battery once a year."
