The ComNav Mariner X2 AIS (Automatic Identification System) B Transceiver is a device designed to receive the positions and identities of other nearby vessels as well as transmit the position and identity of the user's vessel.

Please note, in addition to this unit, the user will need a few other important items to set up the AIS.

  • If this unit is going to be installed without a view of the sky (below decks), an external GPS antenna will be needed.
  • A dedicated VHF AIS antenna. This is an antenna which is specifically tuned to communicate on 162 MHz. A splitter with access to the main VHF antenna is also a possible solution, but may technically invalidate compliance with any USCG rules to which the vessel may be subject.
  • In order to set up and use the AIS, the user must apply for an MMSI (Mobile Marine Service Identity) that must be programmed into the AIS unit. If the vessel is a recreational vessel, is not required by law to carry a radio, and does not communicate with or visit foreign ports such as Canada or Mexico, the user can obtain an MMSI through Boat US. Otherwise, the user must apply for an MMSI by obtaining a Ship Station License from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). If the user already has a Ship Station License with a Call Sign, the MMSI will be listed on it.

Please Note: This AIS unit is a Class B unit, which is generally used by commercial vessels that are voluntarily reporting their position. The USCG requires some vessels to have AIS units; many of these are required to have Class A units, but a select few are allowed to use a Class B instead. It is important to verify which class the user is required to use.
